Atlantic Tripletail are a coastal, surface dwelling member of the Lobotidae family and is the only member of its family that can be found in the Atlantic Ocean. As juveniles they are usually bright yellow and floating on the surface. The first time I saw one was in our marina. I thought it was strange to see a fall colored leaf in the middle of summer. Then, I noticed it was staring at me. This behavior is thought to be part of their feeding strategy. They can grow to be 41 pounds but average between 2-15 pounds and are commonly seen around structures or just below the surface over deep, open water, although always associated with floating objects. This particular fish has had a close encounter with a propeller or two.
